A number of students from three Cheshunt schools have taken part in projects to connect young people with the great outdoors. The aims of the project were to help engage the students with their local environment, build relationships across the schools, and get the students to take responsibility for creating something. Students donned their outdoor clothing to complete these projects, building and improving the outside areas of each of the three schools involved. Taking Control of the Environment Cheshunt School gained a seating area, built amongst some trees in the school’s grounds. A bark walkway was also constructed to link the seating area with the dining hall. A conservation area was made available to the students of Turnford School thanks to the project. This is set to provide hands on al fresco learning opportunities across the curriculum. The final school involved in the project, Goffs School saw students building raised beds to create a school allotment area, as well as walkways and equipment shed. Hands on Learning Students across the project were given valuable hands on learning activities, whilst working as a team. Pete Maiden, director of Cheshunt Extended Services, which ran the project praised the students who worked so hard, “the students were full of enthusiasm and were constantly coming up with great ideas of how best to benefit the schools.” As well as teaching the students to engage with the great outdoors, the students are now likely to pass on their knowledge to surrounding primary schools. |
